I’m in and I sent you an email. I already planned on starting Cycle 1 on June 1st. I’ve been perpetually in Cycle 2 and 3 for awhile now, so it’s no shock why I hadn’t lost anything. So, it’s back to basics starting tomorrow. I would like to lose another 20lbs. Thanks for the push!

I’ve happened upon your website a few times but now it is bookmarked on my desktop. I bought the book on April 1st and have found one excuse after another to “wait until next Monday.” Well, I emailed you last night also & started the diet this morning. I need to lose 60-70 lbs. and am really nervous about being able to stick with it. It’s a little past lunchtime on D1C1R1 and I’m hungry. I am so tired of being fat, I used to turn heads every where I went & now I can’t even get people to smile back at me walking down the street. My back hurts, my knees hurt, and last week my doctor diagnosed me with high blood pressure & I have to take the same medicine my 70 year old mother takes. My doctor said, “Lose 30 lbs. or you’ll end up with diabetes or a heart attack before you even hit menopause.” I don’t WANT to lose this weight, I NEED to! I am in…all the way in!

Hi Terri. I love the support on here. I’m on C1D15R1. I’ve lost 9lbs. I’m hoping to get my 10 before the end of C1!! I’m in for the 51 day challenge! If I lose the 20, I’ll weigh what I did in high school! I’ll have to get out all my 80′s clothes (maybe not such a good idea)! Thank you to you and everyone who offers support.

I am new here, I hope to lose the 20 pounds, but will be happy to lose 10.. doubt it will happen.. but can hope.. on c2 and c3 r1, no loss at all, I do ride my bike outside 30 min every day, have bad knees, can’t do weight bearing things… I do upper body with 5 lbs weights repeating the routine 3x a day… (each routine is about 5 to 6 minutes)..
    I am in!

I am in. Just sent you the email. Not sure if I have 20 pounds to lose, but I am going to try. The book says I should be 98 pounds (5’3″, small frame). Don’t see that happening. Medical recommendations (based on BMI) is between 107 and 141. So, it may be possible to lose 20 pounds to get to 125. Let’s do it!

Daniele, I would start the challenge and if you get to where you’re comfortable, before you hit 20 pounds, great…I honestly don’t like having a certain number…I think you’ll know when you get “there” that you’re “there”!

    May 31, 2011 @ 21:44:46

I’m in! I sent you and email and created an account. I’m starting Cycle 1, Day 1 tomorrow, June 1st! My goal is to lose 60 pounds. I turn 40 in September, so I’m ready to look as good as I feel!

  18. Daniele
    May 31, 2011 @ 22:34:19

I agree. It has been so long since I was “there”, I have no idea what “there” looks like on the scale. Who knows, it could be 10 pounds from now or 30 pounds from now. That doesn’t account for the muscle I’m gaining; never done strength training before. So we’ll see. But having this challenge will keep me motivated to find out what “there” is.

Jennifer, stick to it and make sure you drink your water and your tea with each meal. I find when I am motivated and sticking to it, I am not hungry at all as I’m drinking so much. Stick to it – you’ll thank yourself for it!

I’m in! I went and got all my groceries today…one question? I live in Okinawa, Japan and not one of our commissaries carries Kefir or acidophilus milk and the greek yogurt is $4.50 for 4 little 4 oz cups. I can go out in town and shop at the local grocery stores but it is even more expensive. The book says we can have plain yogurt but all the labels I read today seemed to have a lot of sugar? I’m one of those people who has done so many different diets that my brain is overloaded with info…but if I remember right, the sugar that is in fat-free plain yogurt is ok…not the same as the sugar in other things?
I look forward to tomorrow and I have my green tea made and my lemons ready!!!

  21. Terri
    Jun 01, 2011 @ 01:00:32

Well, the fat free yogurt has more sugar…have you considered making your own yogurt? I haven’t done it but I hear it’s very easy and I’m sure you could find instructions online. Try to stay under 9 grams of sugar per serving…the other option is to purchase probiotic supplements and not bother with the yogurt!

It says this in the book: “pg. 86 of the book, which is cycle 3. Probiotics, Dairy and Dairy substitutes: 1 -2 servings a day. 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk = 1 serving” In fact I’d told some people to have the almond milk or soy milk and take a probiotic supplement and forget the yogurt. Or Kimchee! :-) Is also a fact anything fermented…sauerkraut too!

Since I tell people to be very careful when using the menus in the book (I recommend people don’t actually) make sure to supplement with the freebies lists. The menus in the book are only 800-900 calories a day which is WAY to low and in fact some people can’t lose because they are going into starvation mode…SO the milk is not going to interfere with your weightloss if you’re having it INSTEAD of yogurt especially if you have the supplements.

Basically, you’re right, there is no such thing as sugar-free yogurt – they all (all dairy products for that matter) have some natural milk sugars ( I think that’s what you’re referring to when you said that the sugars in fat free plain are okay..but you don’t have to be as concerned with the fat…low fat would be fine. What you want to avoid are “added sugars”. But, yes, all yogurts have some sugar in them – natural milk sugars. What you want to avoid are added sugars.

Flavored “light” yogurts may have little or no fat, but they can contain as much as 14 grams of added sugars (added to the sugar occuring naturally in the yogurt you can get as high as 24 grams!), like high fructose corn syrup, or more per serving. In fact the non fat yogurts are often the WORST (and by the way this is very common with Non Fat foods and one reason these foods are making us fatter and fattter) because they remove the fat and replace the missing taste with, what else, SUGAR! So you think you’re eating something healthy by choosing non fat when in fact you’ve made a worse choice!

AND, if you’re even a little heavy to start with, eating sugar works against you because it prompts the body to store more than a third of those calories as fat. If you can’t find a yogurt that is 9 grams or less of sugar how bout making your own and sweetening it yourself with berries, Truvia and/or Agave.

    Jun 01, 2011 @ 01:14:06

Wow that was a quick response!!!! It must be really early there! I did go ahead and buy the greek yogurt today and I think I will keep it to a once-a-day thing and use the unsweetened almond milk. I would rather eat the probiotics! I did see that today and wondered if that was ok. Sometimes our options in the military commissaries over here are limited, but they are getting better as more and more of us request healthier items.
    Thanks for the help!

No reason to “feel hungry”… On cycle one you can eat more protein, and veggies of course…… The extra protein will help fill you up, and with a glass of water, the “pangs” will disappear.
Good luck… you can do it!

Question: Why do you not recommend menus in book? Just curious. I tend to not follow 100% but I do use the meals as a reference/template. This is my second go-around with the diet and I did really well on cycle 1 the first time using the printed menus. I lost 12 pounds in about 20 days. I am hoping to see that kind of success again although motivational wise I am finding it more difficult this time. Just need to get my brain wrapped around it again. Did well yesterday (Day 1) and down 2.4 pounds today. Of course, a lot of water weight but fine with me! I don’t want excess water hanging around making me feel fat, puffy and bloated either!

I signed up this evening and am very excited! Most likely I have less than 20 lbs to lose;I have no idea what my target weight goal would be, but as Terri said, I’ll know when I get there. I’m looking forward to the inspiration, motivation, and information that will help me alter my poor eating behaviors and achieve my goal. Today is C3D17R2 for me, so it’s the perfect time for me to jump into the challenge….

  31. Terri
    Jun 01, 2011 @ 20:27:36

RunMomRun, primarily this advice is for Cycle 1 because the menus are far too low in calories…if you supplement them with plenty of food on the “Freebies” lists or a protein shake they are okay but alone they hardly add up to 800-900 calories a day. Many who were not losing weight added food and started losing because basically their bodies were going into starvation mode…holding onto to fat and calories. Others were not getting the appropriate nutrition and having health issues which is why it’s so important NOT to skip the step of taking a multivitamin (recommended in the book)….

Gale, Unfortunatley that “not getting enough” is the usual…lately it’s not getting ANY which is just not working for me! This has been like starting a small business and has required 18 hours a day some days and while the pay off is not monetary, the rewards are still great! :-)

I started on Monday, May 30th and just stumbled across this site. Sor far,
so good — down 5 pounds in three days! The water is a killer for me though -
I just don’t like plain water. I’m doing it, but is there any tricks (i.e. can
I put in some truvia and sqeeze some lemon juice into the water?)

  36. Terri
    Jun 02, 2011 @ 13:56:14

We haven’t slept in two days! I’m exhausted…we anticipated about 50 people wanting to do Area 51 (51 days is all three cycles btw) and we currently have over 300….which is fantastic but it has set me behind…just be patient and I promise we will be kicking some of our flabby butts in a day or the meantime figure out what you can and if you have questions or are having problems send them to: “The Husband” at

We will be full steam ahead once I can get some sleep…hopefully in the next day or two…I’m fine, nothing about three days in bed wouldn’t cure! :-) I have not had a day off from the board since December…and I work about 12-18 hours a day on it, 7 days a week…so I’m pretty tired! But we’ll get organized soon and they my GOAL is to do board hours..or “office hours” for when people need me specifically to answer questions…at least that’s my GOAL!

  37. Marybeth
    Jun 04, 2011 @ 13:28:53

    I’m back….

Finals were killing me, so I gave up the diet temporarily. But now, at 55, I am a college graduate! I’m very excited, have no idea what I’m going to do with my degree, but feel a real sense of accomplishment.

I lost about 20 lbs in 3 months at the beginning of the year. Had a super-bad flare up with an old hip injury that curtailed exercising in April. Felt better by May, but finals hit. Now I’m done, and need to go back on the plan. I regained a little more than half the weight I lost, but I am actually starting to focus on my eating again before I regain it all…for me, that’s progress!

I went back on Cycle 1 day 1 on Tuesday 5/31. I haven’t weighed myself since Monday; I think for the long term it’s probably better if I can weigh about 1x per week. Yesterday (day 4) I started really craving carbs and feeling bad, same today. I had an extra low-fat dairy serving yesterday and made it through okay. Today I decided to come back to the blog and read to help me stay motivated. The most helpful thing I read said that my choice is to stay on the diet or stay fat. I don’t feel very good right now, but I’m going to keep eating permitted foods. Hopefully later I’ll feel good enough to do a little time on the elliptical machine.

Anyway, I’m glad to reconnect with you all, and I signed up for the challenge.

  38. Terri
    Jun 04, 2011 @ 14:33:55

HI Marybeth! I envy your student status! Bravo for you! I finally at 57 figured out some things I would love to have done but now I’m too old … but I wish I’d started that degree at your age! I think it’s just wonderful. And, inspiring!

I’m so glad you signed up for the challenge. Some people did not like the idea of publicly telling their weights and personal stories. This gives them the opportunity to have a safe place to talk and share and also combined the blog people and the Facebook people. Keep your exercise to a minimum with that hip! You still are ahead of the game by keeping half that weight off! Good for you…and coming back now is a great plan! I’m so happy to see you back…and really just so inspired by your college graduation…I really am… You’re my hero!

    Jun 04, 2011 @ 18:20:17

Julie you are supposed to have lemon water every morning and yes, adding Truvia is fine. I can’t drink plain water either…I try but the only place I seem able to get it down is the gym and even then it has to be frozen! So I understand! He has also said lately that it’s okay to use Crystal Light and other water enhancers although they have artificial sweeteners and of course he says to stay away from I think in moderation it’s okay to use them. The most important thing is getting the water, or fluid down. Regardless of how you do it.

  41. vbjaws
    Jun 06, 2011 @ 11:07:41

Terri, thanks for the reply! I have managed to get 7-8 glasses of pure water
down every day, but it has been a struggle. I have only had 2 glasses of green
tea during the first week and only was able to drink the hot water with lemon
one morning — I’ll try adding a little truvia — I’m sure that will make help a
ton! After one week, I am down 6.5 pounds!!!!
Can you tell me more about your cookbooks?
    Thanks, Julie

  42. Terri
    Jun 06, 2011 @ 12:02:26

It has a search feature so it’s easy to find what you need. Recipes are also listed by Cycles – all Cycle 1′s are of course good for Cycles 1, 2 3 and 4, all Cycle 2′s are good for Cycles 2, 3 and 4 and so on. I review all the recipes carefully to meet the cycles. I know there are recipes on line too but I’m shocked to read how many recipes are listed for Cycle 1 for instance that to NOT comply with the diet so you really have to be careful with what you make UNLESS you follow the cookbook!
    Some recipes include:

    Breakfast Blueberry Cobbler
Buffalo Chicken Salad with Blue Cheese Dressing
    Butterflied Rosemary Lemon Chicken
    Caramelized Scallops
    Carrot Chips
    Vegetable Chips
    Cheesecake Stuffed Strawberries
Chicken & Spinach Soup with Fresh Pesto
Chicken, Charred Tomato and Broccoli Salad
Crockpot White Chili with Chicken (and about 5 or 6 other crockpot recipes)
    Fake Shake and Bake Chicken
    Pad Thai
    Peppered Pork Tenderloin
    Picante Chicken
    Potato Crust Vegetable Pizza
    Cauliflower Crust Pizza
    Eggplant Pizza

So many I can’t think of them off the top of my head but people have raved about them. I am 57 and NOT a whiz in the kitchen and there’s not a recipe in here I can’t make myself!

I orderd the cookbooks last week. They have lots of wonderful recipes in them although I haven’t tried any of them yet. I will in the next couple of days. question, though…..Are they sent in a format that can’t be printed? I just get a jumbled mess when I print and I kinda like to have paper to flip through. I’ve tried on two printers from where I work. Thanks for letting me know!

  46. Terri
