NOTE:  This list is exactly what was sent to me from The Doctors Show when I was a participant.  If the Dr. has changed his food lists since then, I don’t know, but what I do know is that THIS was the plan they used when we did the TV shows The Doctors and Dr. Phil Show.  These are the menus and food lists I know that work!  So these are the food lists we’re working with on this site since our combined goal is to lose the most amount of weight in the shortest amount of time, which was the goal they had when we did the show!

People can be so hurtful. I have never met you but I can tell you are a warm, kind hearted person. You could be doing something else in your spare time but you chose to help us by writing a blog. Please don’t stop because of a few unhappy, unloved individuals with nothing better to do than find fault in others. I need you and everyone on this blog.

I’m confused. I thought the book said we could have unlimited veggies. Your list says limited.

  13. Lorilee
    Jan 13, 2011 @ 11:14:34

    I mean “liberal”

  14. Terri
    Jan 13, 2011 @ 12:38:59

Please reread. Vegetables are LIMITED to ones on the list. You can have unlimited amounts of those veggies – but veggies are limited to the ones on the list. In other words you can’t have cucumbers or radishes, etc.

    Hi Terri ,

I am so excited to start to be healthy woman. It’s nice of you to have this website. I have the 17 day diet book I judt have a question to ask you what kind of yogurt I can buy (can you be specific) . I just feel a lil wired asking you this question but in the book it doesn’t specify. Can you helpful?

  17. Terri
    Jan 13, 2011 @ 17:07:05

Hi Tina! We’re very happy to have you here! If you read through all the comments you will see many suggestions on yogurt. The best thing you can do is buy non fat without fruit and add your own berries. You can use Truvia for sweetener if you’d like. That said many are finding yogurt in the store with fruit with only 4 grams of sugar which is outstanding. You want the lowest sugar content you can find. Lots of non fat and low fat yogurt with fruit already in them have very high sugar content (16g and higher) Those are the ones you want to try to avoid. That said my husband went to pick up yogurt for me and got one of the “bad” ones so I’ll probably eat it before the gym today!

You can also buy non fat plain and add some sugar free jam or preserves to it. I’ve heard the FAGE and Chobani brands of Greek yogurt are good. Greek yogurt is higher in protein (may keep you full, longer) but are thicker than other types.

Did you ever dream YOGURT could be so complicated?!?!?

While I don’t know it all – and that’s an understatement – I will answer any thing I can so please don’t feel “weird” to ask anything. If I can’t answer someone else will jump in and probably can! So please – ASK away.

Any one else weigh in on the YOGURT advice or experience?

I don’t have the book yet so I don’t really know how this is supposed to work but…

what beverages are we allowed to drink?

  19. Terri
    Jan 13, 2011 @ 17:29:35

Mike did you read the OVERVIEW? That should help. You can have coffee, not supposed to have diet soda but if you do you have to compensate by drinking more water…I’m on my way to the gym. YAY ME. But I’ll answer more later if you can’t find what you need in the OVERVIEW section!

Hi Terri – first nice blog – I am enjoying it very much. Started the diet on Monday and am already losing – although I would give my left leg for a piece of bread (whole grain of course) and some butter. You ROCK! Ignore the grumpy people and the complainers and naysayers. If they read your blog they should know that you are approved to post what you are posting and have been very clear about not posting the things which you should not. I say – well done you and thank you.

Terri.. You are an amazing woman! Do not worry about the Haters. They are just pitiful soul-less people that find distain in everyone and anything in life. Its sad that, they can’t see good, loving, helful people. One day they will open their eyes and it will be to late.
I can’t wait for my book so I can piece everything together. But from what you have given here, and on FB I have lost 10lbs. I have told you I love you. lol :)

Terri, Please don’t let a few ignorant people spoil the benefits that everybody else is receiving from your hard work. The list is so very helpful for those starting cycle 1. I would LOVE to have a grocery list for cycle 2! I love the Fage 0% Total Greek Yogurt. It has 0% fat, and 0% added sugar. All milk products will have “some” sugar… it is unavoidable. Just be sure to check the ingredients that it doesn’t contain added sugar. I add 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1 packet of Splenda, mix it well, and enjoy. I’ve also used this as a dip for pears.

I have used it with canned chicken breast to make a quick and easy chicken salad (counting as my probiotic serving). Add finely sliced celery and some seasoning; it is really good served on a bed of spinach or fresh greens.

This yogurt is very filling, and I don’t feel deprived or hungry afterward.

Thanks, Terri, for this blog and the support you provide us on our journey to a smaller size.

So happy to learn of this blog – thanks so much. I just started the 17 day diet yesterday and still learning the foods allowed in cycle 1. I have found that even after one day I am not craving the sugars. WOW.
As to proteins, does anyone know if non-fat cottage cheese is allowed on cycle 1?

Thanks for the postings it is so helpful to have the support of others while we are on this journey to a healthier lifestyle.

I just got my book and DVD this morning. I have been SO mentally ready (for a change) but am now feeling totally overwhelmed and confused. A workbook would certainly help. Thank you so much for the shopping list, but I have no clue of how much to buy of each item for one person. Also, I would SO appreciate a copy of your spreadsheet. I have children as well, and a husband. I normally don’t buy anything without a coupon, and only when it’s on sell, etc.., etc… But I decided it was worth the upfront cost to buy the things for my families health and weight loss ( actually I’m the only one that needs to loose, one child actually needs to These are healthy foods so everyone at my house is going to eat them, if they like a different veg, then just use that one instead ( there is a great variety). My children are still eating their snacks and such. My grocery bill was a little bit higher, but when I actually broke it down to how many meals we will get from it, it still was not bad. I did go to a different store than normal because it was cheaper to do so. Also the items needed are pretty readily available in most places. We just have to get out of our comfort zone and look around. Good luck

Thanks so much for documenting the grocery list on your site. I’ve ordered my book last week and I’m still waiting on it, but you have given me the jump start I needed. I’ve lost 5lbs in 7 days and 1 inch in my waist I have only been able to exercise 2 days this week. I am at the age where it’s been years since I have been able to lose weight and I was also fighting a non stop sugar/salt addiction. I will continue this to see if I can lose more and it makes it easier since this has every food I love, where other diets excluded half of the items. I make a greek yoguert -berry -strawberry – smoothie every morning and it fills me up until lunch! LOVE this so far. thanks again

    Jan 24, 2011 @ 06:04:00

Today i finally got started!! Still waiting on the book but thrilled i could at least get a good start :). I did notice most of the menus i’ve seen, always have green tea after. Also noticed the hot lemon water in the morning. Is that a MUST? I really just cant seem to deal with taht one lol Im hoping just some black tea, would be ok, then have breakfast with my green tea after.

also, i am a cereal person, and wanted to know if any cereal would be ok or is that in another cycle? Most thinking either plain cheerios (with 1 g of sugar and 2 g fat) or even the multigrain (with 6 g but only 1 g fat) . Thought maybe a cup could be sufficent for a snack if i crave it too much lol.

my problem is that I am an extremely fussy eater – don’t like a lot of different veggies, limited likes. also not a fish eater. am going to try it though. ordering the book tomorrow when I have time at work to do so. would love a copy of the food list sent to me also :) Thanks

Processed cereals are extremely glycemic, even without added sugar. Not good on this diet, where we’re trying to have our carbs in a more slowly-assimilated form.

I understand we can use any types of herbs to better flavor dishes or fat-free dressings in salads but when it comes to maranating chicken or other proteins can i use regular barbeque sauce or is that a problem??? I’m just unsure how to make the food more palletable without using a whole bunch of salt or prepackages maranades or salt filled seasoning packets.

This is wonderful that I am able to get the grocery list before I even receive my book! An easy way for someone to have the list on hand is to copy and paste it to word and print it off, so then it is at your finger tips at the grocery store! I am super excited to start this and become the new “ME”!

  79. Judy
    Jan 28, 2011 @ 11:45:54

I started on Jan. 13th and as of Jan. 22nd I had lost 6.6 lbs. Only weighing on Saturdays – can’t wait until tomorrow to see my progress. Nothing much is mentioned about bread or milk products. I usually don’t eat much of either but it seems I am craving just a bite of wheat bread and a glass of 2% milk. Would that hurt my progress much? I start Cycle 2 Sunday but really happy with Cycle 1 (except for the bread and milk).

  80. Terri

Don’t do it Judy. Don’t. If you decide on milk have Almond milk or Soy or Acidolphilus…bread..SO BAD but I know what you mean. I have the stomach flu and that’s piece of wheat toast tasted so good YET my weight was UP today! (Yes, after I threw up all day)

So will we EVER be able to eat bread again? I can’t see this to be reality for a lifestyle change. I have been reading this blog for 3 days. I want to try it for the quick weight loss and then stay eating healthy, smaller portions. But I don’t want to feel like I can’e EVER eat normal food again or it will up my weight that quickly!!! Will I EVER be able to “taste” ice cream, bread and tortilla chips again?

Hi everyone! Really enjoying the discussion. My problem is that so far I just haven’t been able to bring myself to but ONE MORE diet book. So far from what I’ve read this is very similar to Atkins…lean meat, eggs, lo fat cheese, veggies etc. What is supposed to make this so unique? Help me decide! :)

Well, thanks to you I will be beginning my journey to a healthier me tomorrow. I appreciate all the time you put in placing the information out for all of us to see. I had ordered my book, but based on all the feedback regarding the length of time it takes to receive it, I am sure I would have lost my momentum if it were not for you. Thanks and will keep you updated.

Terri and this web site have been a blessing for, I am starting Day 1 today and
escited to see results. Can anyone tell me we can have unsweetend no sugar added
    apple sauce?

  95. mkate23
    Feb 02, 2011 @ 08:30:03

Shelia – recently Dr. Mike said Crystal Light is okay if it is the sugar free type.

  96. mkate23
    Feb 02, 2011 @ 08:31:13

Lisa – I have seen some receipes for “apple sauce” I would think as long as NO SUGAR has been added it would be okay. Check out the receipes and see if you can see the simple make it yourself one.

  97. mkate23
    Feb 02, 2011 @ 08:33:12

Brenda – no creamer – you can use the acidophilius milk though. I am a big coffee drinker and am drinking it with out cream (guess I was actually drinking cream with a splash of coffee before). I am using Splenda (not necessarily a good thing at all) so NO SUGAR really. Coffee is a truly different experience now for sure. Good Luck!

I started on Sunday, Feb 6th and I am also having the hardest time finding the Acidophilus milk. I live in Maryland. Also is it okay to buy the Green Tea Diet large gallon bottles? So far I am sticking to it exactly and went on the scale this morning and have lost 4 lbs. Also I usually do Jazzercise and I noticed on the first day after working out (the day I started) I was very hungry and wondering if I should go less often. Thank you so much for this website!

Hi Y’all! So, my hubby is in the US Army. His getting ready to go to the field in two weeks and needs to drop 15 pounds. It is amazing what his Army buddies are suggesting (Preparation H, REALLY?). Anyway, do any of you have any idea how I can get my hands on some starter information for him? We are in a time crunch and there is some kind of back up on the main website to order the book. By the time I get it, he’ll be gone. If any of you would mind helping me and my soldier, it would be very much appreciated. Kindest Wishes.

Abby the first 17 days of the program are under OVERVIEW and the grocery list here. You can read that and see if that might give him a start. Also check out the Facebook site (link on the right hand side of main page) and read the blog posts. There are men who have dropped that much in 17 days but it of course depends on how much he has to lose, his starting weight, etc.

Oops! Brussel Sprout IN a turkey meatball.
Use frozen brussel sprouts. Season ground turkey to your liking (I used garlic/onion powder, Mrs. Dash, Jack Daniels steak sauce). Please defrosted sprout in the middle of a meatball, cover completely. I put foil in a glass dish, and baked 20 meatballs at 350 for 30 minutes. Delish (make rice and gravy for hubbie)

Cauliflower: Steam, drain, sprinkly with salsa and a little cheddar==delish!

Crustless Pizza with Turkey Pepperoni – Take a chicken cutlet, pound to 1/2″, season, fry both sides in skillet. Saute, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, etc in another pan. Cover chicken w pizza sauce, add veggies and turkey pepperoni, and shredded string cheese. (I plan to try this with a thick cut piece of chicken lunch meat from the deli to save time. This recipe is from Hungry Girl.)

I need meatless recipes for meatless Mondays.

Hi,I’m confused about the green tea. Should it be cold, hot? regular or decaf? I found Lipton green tea with citrus, but it has high fructose corn syrup and of course calorie as well. Should I not be drinking this or what do you think? I’d hate to add 300 calories a day by drinking 3 glasses of this but isit allowed?.Thanks in advance! I would very much appreciate a response if you have a minute. Thank you.

  121. Terri
    Feb 28, 2011 @ 16:32:36

The tea can be hot or cold and NO you cannot drink anything with fructose in it. NO SUGAR. That’s what you’re working to eliminate. You should not be drinking it – it’s very very bad for you weight wise and health wise.

  122. bj
    Feb 28, 2011 @ 16:37:11

Thanks for the response,do you have any suggestions for which kind?

  123. Terri
    Feb 28, 2011 @ 16:49:48

There are hundreds BJ. Lipton makes one..Mine is just a lipton tea bag but there are hundreds of different brands and types, some flavored. Any is fine as long as there is no sugar in it.

If it’s possible,I have one more concern(I’m waiting on the book as we speak) as far as the 2 servings of fruit before 2 pm,is that on top of the fruit at breakfast or 1 at breakfast and another before 2 pm? Thanks

  125. Terri
    Mar 01, 2011 @ 00:26:29

I’m not sure I understand your questions BJ…It’s not additional fruit. You cannot eat fruit after 2:00 PM and you cannot have more than 2 servings of fruit a day.

    Mar 07, 2011 @ 09:19:39

i have a question about the eggs… says 1 serving is 2 eggs, but no more than 4 per week or 2 per day. Does that mean (4 or 2) servings or (4 or 2) individual eggs? Thanks!

  129. Terri
    Mar 07, 2011 @ 11:06:55

Maranda, you can have more eggs if you don’t have a problem with cholestreal…if you do it’s no more than 4 eggs a week, 2 per serving. So it would be 2 servings at 2 each – 4 per week.

I eat probably 4 to 6 eggs a week right now on Cycle 1.

  130. maranda
    Mar 07, 2011 @ 11:31:46

Thanks for clarifying that, Terri! A boiled egg is an easy snack for me that seems to satisfy me pretty well, so I was hoping it was 4 servings a week instead of 4 eggs, but OH WELL! I really do want to stick with the rules in cycle 1 and see what happens! :)

  131. Terri
    Mar 07, 2011 @ 11:32:56

Maranda as I said if you don’t have cholesteral problems you can have more eggs. I eat more per week…

I am on 13 day of Cycle 2 and have hit a plateau. I am following the program to the letter. I have only lost 10#. I admit that I have a hard time losing weight on any program. Hello everyone HELP!!!!!! I love this diet but im getting extremely frustrated I am
on day 11 of cycle 2 i lost 11 1/2 pds on cycle 1 and only 3 pds on cycle 2 so far and those 3 pds were in the first 4days of cycle 2 otherwise i have stayed exactly the same the remaining days i following the diet to a t i have not cheated in the slightest i have exercised at least 30 min a day with the exception of 3 days PLEASE ANY SUGGESTIONS I DONT WANT TO FAIL THIS TIME I HAVE HIGH HOPES and want to lose this weight once and for all! THANKS

  136. Sarah
    Mar 12, 2011 @ 08:42:49

Brenda – Try upping you exercise a little bit. Change it up. I have found that when you change the kind of exercise you do, its like a jump start in over that plateau. Example, If you were walking – try riding a bike, Running – try swimming. These are just examples but try your chances with something new!

  137. Terri
    Mar 12, 2011 @ 12:34:52

Actually Brenda that’s about right. Cycle two it’s not unusual to lose 1.5 to 2.0 pounds a week so you’re right on target! There is no way possible you’re going to lose at the same rate you do in Cycle one in the beginning. Even if you continued Cycle 1 your weight loss would still slow down to about where it is now. You must be patient…losing weight is hard work! If it wasn’t we’d all be thin, right?

Remember Brenda: The ONLY way you can fail at this diet is to quit. There are 100 ways to make it work and only one way to fail. Stick to the plan and you will lose. Did you measure at first? Or take your photos?

    Did you read this post:

    Mar 15, 2011 @ 15:00:36

Thanks for supplying this site for everyone. Help, I am so frustrated! I am on day 15 of cycle one (with one cheating episode on St. Patrick’s Day parade day) and up 2 pounds from my original. I wanted to lose around 8 pounds total. I am in my range, however, I am smaller boned and feel I am carrying too much for my frame. I have always watched what I eat, but I always included many carbs and alcohol. Is anyone else in the same situation where they gained on cycle one? husband, who is also in his normal BMI lost 8 pounds eating the same foods (and some cheating)! I already exercise on a regular basis. Any thoughts on what is going on with my metabolism?? I am 37 years old. Thanks so much!

Can we eat seaweed and miso in cycle 1? I like miso soup with wakame for breakfast sometimes. If I don’t have lemon for the AM water can I substitute cider vinegar with mother in it instead? Thanks for any help with those questions and thanks for all the great info in your blog Terri. I hope you are feeling better!!

  141. Terri
    Mar 16, 2011 @ 07:29:23

Since you have so little to lose D. Davis your weight loss is going to be slower which is why I say not to compare weights and pounds loss (did you read that post?) “Share but don’t Compare” Since you are realitively healthy in eating and exercising this will slow your loss also. If you are only 8-10 lbs overweight dropping your calories only by a few hundred a day – it might take 7-10 days to lose a pound. The weight will come off but you will need to be patient and cannot afford ANY cheats! You cannot compare your loss to people who are trying to lose 30, 40, even 100 lbs! obviously they were eating a lot of calories daily just to maintain their weights. You were probably only eating 200-400 a day more than you needed to maintain yours. BUT if you stay with it you will lose but with that little bit to lose you CANNOT AFFORD TO CHEAT and lose weight. It will not work.

  142. Terri
    Mar 16, 2011 @ 07:31:47

Just remember exercise should not be really increased significantly until Cycle 3.

Debbie, I don’t think the person doing this does it anymore. There was just too many requests. I’m sorry. She might but if you don’t get an answer I just wanted you to know it was nothing personal! There will be a grocery list in the next cookbook coming out in the next month or so.

Hello, how about ground turkey sausage for cycle 1??

  147. Terri
    Mar 20, 2011 @ 13:14:34

Amanda, most ground turkey in the stores used for sausage includes dark meat which is not allowed. In recipes there is a recipe in the comments section for Lonnies Turkey Sausage which is ground turkey breast and spices. It’s delicious and fine to use. Other wise make sure what you get it white meat only, no dark meat and no skin included.

Hi terri, Things went ok i guess i started cycle 3 on the 18th i ended up losing a total of 7 1/2
pounds on cycle 2 I soooo bad want to skip cycle 3 and jump right back on cycle 1 but if i
understand correctly i cant do that until the end of cycle 3 correct? I still do love this
diet and will NOT give up! Still moving forward day by day!

  149. Terri
    Mar 20, 2011 @ 15:38:05

Brenda, the problem is the more you go to Cycle 1 and not do the other Cycles, the less effective Cycle 1 will become. Your metabolism will just slow down…so I wouldn’t recommend it. I’d finish Cycle 3 and then when you go back to Cycle 1 you are going to get the most bang for your buck!

will you post a list on here for cycle 2 for groceries?

  154. Terri
    Mar 28, 2011 @ 07:06:47

If you read the Overview there are Cycle 2 additions there but the Cycle 2 works much differently as you don’t do the the same Cycle every day. You will really need the book to explain in detail how the cycles work and how to do Cycle 2 and 3.

Why not use some plain greek yogurt, mixing a little vinegar, some fresh clipped herbs, pepper, minced dill pickle, sweet onion etc. use your imagination. Presto, you have tuna salad. Cut open a nice ripe tomato, put tuna on top or inside, place on a bed of dark green lettuce and other cleansing veggies and you have a meal.

I use yogurt, which we’re supposed to be eating anyway, as a substitute for mayo, creamy dressings, toppings, many things. Thick, plain non fat Greek type is best. Add your own seasonings to taste.

Hello all! I have read htrough all the comments but still have 2 questions that I didn’t see answered. First.. the gree tea and the water and hot lemon? Is it option or a a must to add weight lose? Second.. Turnips? They aren’t listed but I though they would be a low strach veg. Thax for the help and for this amazing site!!!

No, turnips are not allowed until later cycles. It’s not the starch it’s the glycemic indes that often makes a difference. But you can read the post “Why can’t I eat radishes” and that might help answer something for you.

Some have lost weight without the green tea and lemon water. They both aid the liver to function more efficiently therefore upping your metabolism..but you will still lose weight without them..maybe not as much or as fast but you will.

I agree, I substitute greek yogurt for sour cream, mayo and use in dips-my husband didn’t know the difference until I told him.

    Hi Terri,

these blogs have been extremely helpful. Thank you for taking all this time to pass along all the information and providing motivation. I have a question on the eggs. I thought we could eat 2 eggs or 4 egg whites per day. Is there a limit per week that we shouldn’t surpass? My husband and I are in Cycle 1 starting Day 8 tomorrow and we’ve been eating 2 eggs a day. I don’t want to hinder our progress.

Hi Jennifer and I’m glad the blogs help…also are you using the Facebook site? The link is on the page on the right – the scales with feet on them (as opposed to feet with scales, YUCK LOL) Re: eggs. Yes you can according to Dr. Mike although I’ve done some research and also talked to some experts who say 14 eggs a week is not healthy. If you don’t have high cholesterol you might when your done.

That said…I’m assuming in Cycle one it’s not too bad as you are not having red meat and high cholesterol foods but I’d definitley be careful and if you plan to do this make an appt. with your Dr., have your cholesterol tested first to make SURE it’s not high (unfortunatley many that are overweight have high cholesterol) and ask you private dr. is 14 or more eggs a week is okay for you.

    That 56 eggs a month.

I say it’s safer to stay under 9 whole eggs a week and eat all the eggs whites you can stand. I mean you’ve had 16 eggs in a week…doing that occasionally might be okay but if you continue to do this (it also matters how much weight you have to lose and how long you plan to do it) for a long period of time, I would check with your Dr. just to be safe. You want to be thinner and healthier…not thinner with high cholesterol! :-) But I don’t think it will effect your weight loss…that’s not the issue. It could effect your health.

Thank you so much Terri! This makes sense and we will start to change up when and how we are eating our eggs. Yes, I’m using the Facebook site and here to help with my questions. You’ve been very supportive and informative. Thank you again!!! This is helping me stay motivated.

I’ve just come across your blog, and I am glad that I did. I have pondering for what seems like forever trying to decide if I was going to try this diet. I am glad to say I purchased my book yesterday, and will be starting next week. :)

Once question I have is what I am able to drink. I’ve read thru many of the posts, and everyone is drinking green tea. I love my diet Brisk Lemon Iced Tea. Is that something I can continue to drink? Here’s the nutrition label.

Kelly you can drink anything that does not contain sugar. You can have diet soda (although he recommends drinking additional water if you do), Crystal Light type drinks, Iced tea, hot tea…the green tea is part of the diet as you know if you’ve been reading the book so that’s why most are asking about that but that doesn’t mean that’s all they drink! LOL…Any beverage that does not contain sugar or sweeteners is okay.

    May 30, 2011 @ 08:51:32

    why can’t we have Splenda?

  171. Terri
    May 30, 2011 @ 12:28:24

Cheryl, probably one thing contributing to your (our) weight gain is artificial sweeteners. In short they tax the liver making it more difficult to function efficiently so instead of burning fat and producing effective digestion it is working overtime to process chemicals in some of the foods we eat. A number one contributor to this is artificial sweeteners which are basically just chemicals. So you can use them of course, it appears from those who have tried that it has slowed the weight loss a little – so the warning is if you choose to do it you may lose less weight in a longer amount of time…but otherwise you can choose to do it!

  172. Terri
    May 30, 2011 @ 14:22:27

Okay..well, you’re getting a lot of sodium so that will certainly increase the numbers on the scale a pound or two. I can’t quite figure out where the carbs are coming from….weird…BUT overall it’s okay. I would additionally NOT count it as your water and in fact according the book you should drink additional water. So for every can of tea, drink an additional glass of water…that might help a little with the sodium.

This will not replace the Green Tea. The Green Tea is part of the diet..that’s why people are drinking it. You are supposed to have it with every meal. So you need three cups of green tea, 8 glasses of water per day…then if you want your cans of tea that is in addition to the water and green tea and you have to drink even MORE water for every can of tea. So, if you have one can a day, you need 9 – 8 oz glasses of water. Two cans a day, 10 – 8 oz glasses of water.

This is why it’s very important to have the book. The diet really cannot be done fully without the book but it’s a quick read so when you get your book you can read it in a day or less but read the entire book not just the cycle your on. There is information all through the book that applies to all cycles…also you MUST take a multivitamin a day, he recommended Flintstones but whatever you take is fine. Be aware that the Green Tea can deplete you of iron and should not be taken during your monthly cycle or if you have problems with iron. You may want to start with one cup a day and work up. It is supposed to curb your appetite although it’s never effected me that way..some have had to stop drinking it for various reasons but often because they are not hungry enough to eat their meals.

But the tea you have cannot be used IN PLACE of the Green Tea, you can have it in addition to.

    May 31, 2011 @ 14:25:09

I gag with the green tea, so I have been taking green tea extract pills, bought them at walmart, I was told this was ok..??

  174. Terri
    May 31, 2011 @ 15:15:25

Yes, it’s fine. I don’t care for it but I use one “regular” tea bag with a green tea back and loads of sweetener and I can get it down without “gagging”… but the supplements are fine to use.

    Jun 01, 2011 @ 18:08:05

I have been reading the posts about the green tea effects. I was concerned about my getting sick to my stomach, and dizziness. Then I read others were having problems also. So, I have completely left it off my diet. What else can I do to replace it? I started the plan on May 5, and as of May 30, down 8.4. I am almost 64 y/o, so it is hard for me to lose. But,l I find this working.

I was wondering if you think the dizziness is caused from not using any salt on my food, and I am on blood pressure medicine? I have been checking my blood pressure and it is down alot from before 17 DD.

Can anyone recommend a brand of acidophilus milk and fat free parmesan? I have never seen fat free parmesan before.

  182. Terri
    Jun 14, 2011 @ 15:35:22

I found this website with some Q&A as to where to find Acidophilus milk throughout the US:

Use the regular parmesan which is naturally low fat. The fat free is not even cheese…it’s “topping” and personally there is no way I would use it. Since you’re using small amounts stick with the low fat (regular in this case) and remember cheese should be a tablespoon or two per serving at the most!

I am reading through the comments and if you haven’t gotten the book yet, try Amazon. I got it for about $15 (s/h) and got it in about 4 days. I just started C1, day 1 today. I’m very excited about this and was so glad that the fruit I love wasn’t off the list (I can wait on watermelon and bananas but at least I get my berries!)

  187. Terri

Thanks Dawn…actually you can order the book through Amazon directly from this site just by clicking the “Store” tab.

  188. Terri
    Jun 21, 2011 @ 22:44:54

Were you drinking the green tea? If so you might want to cut out the green tea. It causes problems for some people including anemeia. If you weren’t drinking it and still getting headaches go to Cycle 2. Don’t do Cycle 1. Also don’t go by the menus in the book they are too low calorically. You need to add foods off the freebies list to make sure you are eating at least 1,200 calories a day. For more support click the scales with feet on them….it will take you to the Facebook site with more “live” support! And make sure you are taking the multi vitamin and drinking the right amount of water. Those are typically the cause of headaches.

    Jun 22, 2011 @ 04:00:17

I have been drinking green tea. I am already anemic so that may be the reason why I was also always tired. I have decided not to allow my weight to beat me so, I started over today. I will cut out the green tea and use a substitution, any suggestions? I did think about the fact that I am consuming too little calories. I will try the diet for a couple of days and see how I feel without the green tea and if I am still experiencing the headaches and fatigue I will try cycle 2. Thanks for your help, I’m sure that I will be your biggest follower for the next couple of days.

  190. Terri
    Jun 22, 2011 @ 14:06:32

ABSOLUTELY stop the green tea! It was a little irresponsible not to mention this important piece of information in the book – but if you’re already anemic this is not something you should have! Start over….listen, the only way to fail is to quit. You may have a few “false” starts…that’s okay….we’re not looking for perfection. You do what you can and when you can you do better! That’s your mantra! Don’t beat yourself up.

I am sorry I will be leaving town for Europe on the 26th and not returning until July 18th. BUT please join Area 51 (you can apply for membership by writing or go to the Facebook site. Can you drink seltzer water on this diet that indicates it is flavored but bottle states zero calories and zero sugars?

  194. Terri
    Jun 25, 2011 @ 11:28:03

He says to keep it to a minimum because it causes bloating…so if you are measuring you will meaure more than you should be! Same with sodas…but there are no calories in it so it has no effect as far as adding pounds…just inches.

Quick question on green tea. Kroger sells a diet green tea in a plastic bottle with sucralose as the sweetener. Can I drink this instead of hot green tea?

    Jul 31, 2011 @ 20:18:12

why is green grapes not allowed and red are? also for a sweetner what about agave and are oats allowed?

love your blog and this facebook page.. thank you so much.

  198. Terri
    Aug 01, 2011 @ 19:34:07

Green grapes are MUCH higher in sugar and MUCH higher on the glycemic index. Agave is suggested in the book – if you don’t have the book you will need it. There is no way to properly follow the diet – too many variables – unless you have the book. There are special foods for PMS and during your cycle….also ethnic foods, etc. so to do it without the book I doubt you will be successful…and trust me, I don’t make anything financially from the sales of the book but it’s not just a list of foods you eat and don’t eat.

    Aug 01, 2011 @ 20:11:43

i am ordering the book.. i am having a small serving of trail mix in the morning.. other than that I stuck to your list today.. no fruit after 2 pm was a killer.. i had a green tea supplement.. tomorrow i will have a green tea with agave.. i also had lemon water on its own no sugar . it was not the most pleasant taste, but it was ok lol. my starting weight this time around is 196… i started out at 370 I got down to 169.. was hospitalized put on steroids.. weight back went up to high 180′s lost my dad over a month ago and my emotions were nuts and i started gaining again well i decided to nip that in the bud… my goal weight is 135.. i have been stuck for awhile.. so im trying to get the last 61 pounds off.. wow i could use the pms info.. i just started.. i get paid next week.. so i am ordering the book. thank you so much for all your help here..

  200. Terri
    Aug 01, 2011 @ 20:37:07

You can order the book off this site you know….under the link “Store” at the top of the page!

Trail mix…VERY bad…it’s very high on the glycemix index. Remember this is not just about calories and carbs…so get away from that stuff! BAD…also did you join Area 51? Also a tab at the top of the page. I started at 210…(those steroids are killers huh? I had to take them too) You can follow Cycle 1 by using this until you get the book but you will need it. I wouldn’t say that otherwise as like I’ve said, it’s surely no money in my pocket!! LOL….Now, are you on the Facebook Site? If you click on the “Scales with Feet” on the right hand side of the page it will take you there. You must “Like” the page to post….Also there are recipes here under RECIPES and on the Facebook site under DISCUSSIONS….and of course I sell three cookbooks which you are free to ask about on Facebook. Most of the 7,000 or so have bought them and Love fact I’ve never had a complaint and they make it so much easier. Don’t just follow the menus in the book…they are too low in calories and should be supplemented with 200-400 calories a day from the lists of Veggies and proteins which you can have any time in any amounts. Yogurt….should be NO MORE than 9 grams of sugar per serving….Low fat is okay. In fact Non fat usually has more sugar…trying to think of anything else I should tell you…….OH Area 51 is a PRIVATE area…Like this, we are doing 51 days, we just stared (51 days is three cycles) so you can easily catch up. Directions on under the tab AREA 51. I started this as a participant on The Doctors TV Show so I learned a lot that is not in the book and from being a personal trainer for almost 20 years. I gained a lot of weight after being assaulted (you can read more About Me under, the tab “About me” Of course!) LOL

Feel free to ask away….especially on Facebook – if I’m not around someone will help you….OH the after 2:00 PM thing…basically it’s not exactly 2PM….you’re not supposed to have fruit 8 hours before bed..And it doesn’t have to be to the minute of course (if you have fruit at 2:15 no one will swoop down and smack you although some might accuse me of doing such a thing if I had the power! :-) )

I go to bed late (or early I guess) maybe 3:00 AM sometimes as I write at night so I can eat fruit until 6:00 or 7:00 PM…..

Good luck…USE THE SUPPORT…that’s what it’s here for and it helps. In fact I’m a strong believer that I could put you on ANY diet and you’d lose weight if you had the support but in general I do believe in low carb, lean protein diets which this is. You can lose that weight….I’ve had people lose as much as 75-80 pounds since January and seemingly painlessly…it’s really not hard once you get started. Read the blog. There is lots of info here to help you. Hope to see you in FB or Area 51 too!

    Aug 01, 2011 @ 20:40:35

As long as there is NO SUGAR…you can drink the tea hot or cold but no sugar or other ingredients. We are not supposed to have sucralose actually so could you make your own green tea and drink it cold? With either Agave or Truvia as sweetener. If you read the book or this blog you’ll read why you can’t use the other sweeteners…..then will slow your weight loss causing you to lose less weight and take more time…than those using Agave and/or Truvia. Also make SURE to take the multivitamin as suggested in the book. Green Tea depletes people of iron…it can cause you to be tired or even become anemic…so take the vitamin or don’t use the tea. Many don’t use it and they still can also take a green tea supplement…

    Aug 02, 2011 @ 07:51:33

Eat that watermelon and quick! Sorry, it’s not allowed until Cycle 2 or 3… (but hey, you can do without it for 17 days or so, right?) Barley, etc. you can have in Cycle 2….There are exercises on this site…we did a 6 week Exercise Monday … if you go through the archives you will find them…they are the best of the best and can be adapted without using your wrists (most of them)

Do NOT buy the ones on Amazon. PLEASE. IN fact Amazon keeps removing them,….someone stole our cookbooks are republished them. Amazon is taking legal action but the person continues to republish under different names and covers. They are also filled with typos and you would be buying the same recipes twice. We do sell the cookbooks to help support the site and the time I put into the site… No bananas…but yes, berries, apples, salads…LEAN PROTEIN…Most of the people here and on Facebook call it a “plan” not a diet….many use various sites like My Fitness Pal to record foods!

    Aug 02, 2011 @ 17:01:37

ok lady.. I had nothing NOT allowed today.. not even my trail mix.. had a mix of blueberries about 7, strawberries and apple slices..

Can someone tell me if I’m allowed to have sunflower seeds and if so during which Cycle? I did the 3 cycles – took last month off for vacations and family events – and now we’ve started back on Cycle 1 – but near the end of cycle 3 I started sucking on sunflower seeds as a snack and drinking twice as much water to make up for the salt… now I still want them but I’m not sure I should.

  206. Terri
    Aug 09, 2011 @ 15:40:10

I’m not sure Cori what you should do. I don’t know how many you are eating…is it 10 or 500? Big difference as nuts are 50% fat and even those little sunflower seeds add up fast. Also I would hesitate with anything that you can sort of mindlessly eat…it’s a bad habit (as proven which is why you’re already having a problem not doing it!) personally I think it’s a slippery slope! And yes the salt too is an issue…I would do Cycle 1 as “pure” and as close to the actual plan as possible…and try to break that cycle. Any mindless eating can lead to problems later. Is it possible you could drink the extra water and skip the seeds?? :-)

HI everybody out there on the 17 day diet … i read through all the posts and wanted to share some of what i have experienced and learned to work with on this diet.I started saturday the 6th and today i weighed 4 pounds less.Hope to keep losing more.
Some pointers …..the coffee creamer at save a lot is zero everything and is non dairy. i use that in my coffee and for the sugar (i loved splenda) .. since the diet i kinda do a half of splenda and half of truvia substitute .. seems like i am getting used to the truvia sugar(i will be eliminating splenda totally in a few days)…As for the chicken i think someone asked how to get it done or cooked , the easiest way that i have found is to go to walmart and get the 5 pound bag of skinless boneless chicken it costs less than $11 .. i get it home defrost it,the entire bag… u will find some pieces very thick which i cut in half … i then poke holes with a knife in all the pieces sprinkle it with nu salt(salt sub) ,pepper ,a tablespoon or to your liking minced garlic and some lite soy sauce and lastly the southwest chipotle powder seasoning from Mrs dash(all the above products available at walmart) … after rubbing all of this together let it stand for 15 mins .. the more longer u allow to soak the better the marinade .. overnight soaking in the fridge is the best but i have cooked this after 15 mins too.. just as tasty .. then i take all the chicken breasts and thrown them in the oven and spray the container with olive cooking spray (or 2 tablespoons of olive oil which can be your serving of oil for the day).. at 400 20 mins on each side and the chicken is done dont forget to check the inside of the chicken breast to see if it is fully cooked … when done i take sandwhich bags and put each cooked and cooled breast in a single bag and put it in the freezer .. i keep some out to use for the next few days but the bulk is in the freezer…. each day you know u need to add chicken to your salad that morning take it out of the freezer and leave it out on the counter top or in the fridge and this can be cut in slices cold and put on your salad or heated in the microwave (the entire sandwhich bag)… u can also place the raw marinated chicken in each bag and freeze it and when needed cook in a pan with 1 tablespoon oil(whatever you choose)This is an easy way to get chicken done and have ready for the entire week…kinda handy dandy
As for the yorgurt i get any low fat plain yogurt in the big container .. when i need to eat my serving i spoon out 8 to 10 tablespoons which is equal to one 6 oz serving and add 2 tablespoons of low suger jam to it ….my favorate is strawberry … but u can change the taste by buying different low sugar fruit jellies … i try to eat the yogurt as a desert after lunch and dinner and this makes up my 2 servings of yogurt for the day… I defi stay on my green tea servings as i think that looks like a crucial part of the diet .. the water is a given … i actually bought a jug fancy one with a straw from Khols($7) .. this jug can carry 64 fluid oz … the moring after i finish my water and lemon i fill that jug up and know that is all i have to finsih for the reat of the day … i actually take this with me to work and sip on it when ever i can.
As for the greens i buy the romain lettuce at walmat $1.88 a head .. i look for the biggest and longest bunch and pick up 2 bundles at one time … i stick them in the green bags not white as i think that keeps them fresh longer … for a serving i take one bundle out cut the base this makes all the leaves single, throw all the leaves back into the green bag count out 8 to 10 leaves or more wash them cut em and that is enough for a serving not including the tomato, onion, cucumber, baby carrots, little nusalt and pepper that i throw in and to finish it off i cut my one chicken breast in it or a small can of light tuna ($.66) drain it and throw that in the salad. The dressing i use is the balsamic vinegarette($1.50 a bottle) i use the lid of the bottle to measure cause that equals to 2 tablespoons which is supposed to be a serving for your salad.
I hope this might help some of you guys out there.

Terri I just want to say thanks for all the help you provide on this site. I’ve just recently found this wonderful blog and it’s been a God send. I’m on D10C1 and I’ve seen so much encouragement here that there is NO WAY I’m giving up and giving in to my old habits. From the bottom of my heart thanks.

Hi Lori…thank you so much! So glad it’s helping you. Just remember you don’t always have to be perfect. There will be holidays and events…you may have to eat “normally” for a day or two…but get right back on. Also you don’t have to be perfect ALL THE TIME…just MOST of the time.
The longer you do it “right” the more your old habits will fade away. You didn’t make those habits overnight and you won’t get rid of them overnight either. The ONLY way you’ll fail…is to QUIT. If you don’t quit…you will succeed I promise you. Again, some lose weight and take a break…then come back…I’ve taken weeks off here and there – not to eat like crazy but just to vacation and I’ve only gained a couple of pounds here and there and went right back on the plan and started losing again.

Also read todays post on WALKING….just move move move…every chance you get…even if it’s for 10 minutes here and there….it adds up. Just EXTRA 8 to 10 minute walk a day adds up to an extra hour of exercise a week!

My husband and I are starting this diet on Monday. What kind of green tea should we drink? Bottled or making it at home?

  211. Terri
    Aug 13, 2011 @ 16:25:05

Any type that is unsweetened. You can use flavored or sweeten it yourself with Agave or Truvia as stated in the book. It doesn’t matter if you make it at home or buy it premade as long as there are no other ingredients in it..

Some people can not drink the green tea and prefer to take a supplement which is okay too. Make sure you take the suggested multivitamin as green tea can deplete people of iron and has caused anemia in some people…a very serious condition..

I’m so sorry about your Dad. My dad and step dad died in the past four years and it’s been very difficult for me. It seems like only yesterday and I miss them both so much.

I am having trouble figuring out if dark meat, such as chicken thighs is allowed as long as it’s skinless??

  217. Terri
    Aug 22, 2011 @ 15:53:34

No, even dark meat without the skin is loaded with fat. Meat is the muscle of an animal and active muscle contains a myoglobin which makes it appear darker than less active muscle. Since chickens do not fly their legs are more active than their breast muscles. The difference in fat content also relates to muscle activity. More active muscle has a higher metabolic need and fat is the most efficient energy source. So the darker meat contains more fat…it’s not just the skin that contributes to additional fat.

    Aug 22, 2011 @ 17:05:18

THANK YOU sO very much. I have been lookin high and low for the answer to that. I have the book but it didnt say if i could or couldnt eat it. It said “skinless chicken” so. I suppose that only leaves me with Turkey since I do not like white meat or fish? I’m in the 1St cycle.

How about Pita Bread? It seems to be fat free.
What makes for “unprocessed”? Whole Wheat? Sprouted Wheat? Somthing else (Be specific).

  220. Terri
    Aug 22, 2011 @ 21:07:05

Max, not until Cycle 3….NO BREAD……..On Cycle 3 you can find the list of approved breads on Page 84 at the bottom of the page (the list is too long to type here)….and one slice is a serving.

I’m really struggling with the lemon water- Any suggestions on how to choke it down easier?

  222. Terri
    Aug 23, 2011 @ 10:09:09

Are you putting sweetener in it? I don’t have a problem. I use sweetener and it’s just like lemonade..I’m not sure what else to tell you but if you really don’t want to drink it, don’t. It’s healthy for you but it’s likely not going to make a huge difference in your weight loss.

    Aug 25, 2011 @ 12:41:33

Hi Terri – I am excited a friend shared this blog with me. I am starting tomorrow. I have the book. Can I have whey protein in the first cycle? I like to use the Greek yogurt and berries in it as a smoothie.

  231. Terri
    Aug 25, 2011 @ 13:36:07

Only in the book. I was given permission to post the Cycle 1 information but the Dr. has not given anybody permission to post the Cycle 2 and up info and it’s copywrite protected.

  232. Terri
    Aug 25, 2011 @ 13:38:44

Yes Lisa, I recommend the whey isolate protein powder” and not just whey protein – it won’t cause cramping. The menus in the book are only 800 to 900 calories a day which are too low and many don’t lose weight by using the menus alone as they go into starvation mode. I recommend adding 200-400 calories a day …either off the Freebies list of proteins and vegetables (you can eat as much as you want, any time you want) OR adding a protein shake. I often use the shake on my workout days. Also there are recipes in Cookbook 1 for additional smoothies.

hello everyone! i was just wondering does anyone know how much 1 serving of fruit is? thanks^^

  234. Terri
    Sep 04, 2011 @ 21:57:18

Melody it depends on the fruit. One apple is a serving…1 cup of berries is a it really depends on the fruit.

    Sep 05, 2011 @ 19:39:04

    Hey Terri,
Tish here again, another confusion in the book, i see on cycle 2 i can have shellfish, is lobster ok? I know it is a shellfish but it didn’t specifically say it was ok.

  236. Nichelle
    Sep 07, 2011 @ 12:40:24

I”m so confused on the type of yogurts that are allowed. Is the nonfat Yoplait allowed. They have flavors like Boston Cream Pie and Kiwi Line.,,,those are the ones in the blue container. How about the Yoplait Low-fat? , which also come in flavors….or does the yogurt HAVE to be plain? I just started the diet yesterday and i want to make all the right choices and not screw up my menu. And is black grapes allowed? I see red is (green not). Thank U so much for your response

  237. Terri
    Sep 07, 2011 @ 16:45:24

Technically Lobster is not allowed until maintenance. I’m sure occasionally it would be okay…but it is not listed until Cycle 3 or 4.

  238. Terri
    Sep 07, 2011 @ 16:52:34

You can have any yogurt that has 9 grams or less of sugar per serving. Often if you’re using yogurt with fruit in it, the low fat has less sugar than the non fat therefore is a better choice! No black grapes or green – too much sugar. Just red. I use flavored yogurts. If I use plain (in place of sour cream for instance) I use Greek style non fat. Otherwise I personally use Carbmaster (Not sold everywhere but there is a list of stores under PHOTOS on the Facebook site) it has 3-4 grams of sugar per serving and only 60 calories. I honestly don’t know about container colors etc. but as long as you look at the sugar content you should be fine.

    Sep 08, 2011 @ 09:39:01

WOW! I found out about the 17 day diet from a friends posting on facebook. I feel like I have finally discovered something that can boost my weight loss efforts…need to lose about 60 lbs and it is true…the WW 2-3 lbs a week doesn’t really keep you motivated! Thanks so much for your effort and to the great support network! My husband and I are so excited and are menu planning and shopping today and are gonna be brave and start tomorrow!

  240. Terri
    Sep 10, 2011 @ 16:17:33

Karen, just so you know, this like all “good” healthy diets will average about 2-3 lbs a week and/or 10 lbs a month. There is actually no other way to do it…anything else is just hype and fad. The bottom line is there is no magical combination or food or pill that can do it any faster. It’s calories in – calories out. Bottom line! The weight you lose the first week or so on the diet is primarily water – so it’s a “one time only” thing. IN other words returning to Cycle 1 or worse, thinking by staying on Cycle 1 you’ll lose faster is wrong. IN fact it could prolong your weight loss not speed it up! It slows down your metabolism to stay on too long!

NOW why I recommend this and not WW’s? Well I’ll tell you…WW’s hypes their own food and products. It’s filled with sugar, preservatives, etc. and is not healthy for you. Their low fat and non fat foods are doing nothing more than making people fat because they remove the fat and replace the taste with sugar! THis is why even with all the “non fat” choices we have now we continue to getter fatter and fatter. Get back to as many natural foods as possible. You can make it convenient after you get the hang of it….I always have turkey cooked in the refridgerator ready to eat all the time. Precooked! I don’t need a “lean cusine” that is filled with junk and doesn’t even curb my appetite I can prepare myself something to eat it less time than it takes to microwave a Lean Cuisine! It just takes a couple of weeks to get into the swing of things.

Good luck and be sure to check in here or on the Facebook site (click the scales with feet on them!)
